Cow Dung Row at DU’s Hansraj College: Sustainability or Symbolism?

New Delhi | April 16, 2025

As seen in the recent blunder by the principle of the Lakshmibai College, the principal to avoid the heat and reducing the usage of air conditioner, painted the walls with cow dung, which was definitely not a sustainable move. The students were triggered by this act and the DUSU president, Ronak Khatri, he led a protest and got up to the principals office wall and he then painted the wall of the principal with cow dung, and this is not the first time, but whatsoever the reason was how would you consider this act as sustainability or symbolism?

A recent move by Hansraj College, Delhi University, to coat classroom walls with cow dung as a natural coolant has stirred widespread debate, protests, and a storm on social media.

🔹 The Trigger

The college administration defended the act as an eco-friendly initiative, citing traditional knowledge and sustainability. Cow dung, known in rural India for its insulation properties, was applied to select classroom walls without prior consultation with students or faculty.

🔹 Student Uproar

The lack of transparency led to outrage. DUSU President Ronak Khatri led a dramatic protest by smearing cow dung on the principal’s office wall, symbolizing student disapproval. Protesters demanded accountability, citing health concerns and a disregard for student opinion.

🔹 Not the First Time

This isn’t the college’s first brush with cow-related controversy. In 2022, Hansraj faced criticism for setting up a Cow Research Center on land originally meant for a women’s hostel—a move students claimed prioritized ideology over infrastructure.

🔹 Bigger Picture

This incident reflects a growing tension in Indian academia between traditionalism and scientific modernity. While sustainability is crucial, students argue it must not come at the cost of logic, hygiene, or inclusivity.

🔹 What’s Next?

Students are demanding a rollback, official explanation, and structured dialogue before implementing such initiatives in the future.

Bottom Line: What was meant to be a “green” initiative has now raised red flags about consent, priorities, and the role of tradition in modern institutions.
